Destin Messianique

Review by

It could be argued that without suffering, great art would be hard to distinguish from the nonsensical. Suffering reminds us that there must be a good, and art reminds us that there is still beauty in a fallen world. When a work of art resonates with the human spirit like black metal band Givre’s new album, Destin Messianique, we’re able to wrestle with the inner turmoil and replace a heart of stone with a heart of flesh.

Hailing from Rouyn Noranda, Québec, Givre’s ethos is summed up in their call to arms: “Atmospheric black metal with historical influences, Givre invites you to reflect on the atoning side of pain.” Givre depicts this ideology in their latest release with cries of the heart that are deeply rooted in their Catholic faith.

The introduction to the album, “La Sainte-Vierge intervenant en faveur de l‘armée française à la bataille de la Monongahéla,” is a dark canvas filled with despair, hope, chaos, and calm. The song’s emotional drive and compelling instrumentation serves as the gateway to the journey to come. Immediately followed by “Le Christ aux Oliviers,” listeners find themselves on a more hopeful path, with almost a fantastical and mystical atmosphere before returning to a more traditional black metal experience. The weight of the tracks seem to dissipate as the record unfolds, with cracks of light seeping into the darkness.

Givre’s latest masterpiece is nothing short of a triumph that proves one of the most misunderstood genres in all of music has grown a heart of flesh in place of stone.

“La voix” emerges with sonic undertones of the band’s Catholic roots, namely the chant-like vocal arrangement. However, the song that captured my utmost attention was “Dernier martyr,” which is arguably the heaviest track on the entire record. As a catalyst on the record and on the road to atonement, the track aches to discover beauty beyond what is hideous.

Givre’s latest masterpiece is nothing short of a triumph that proves one of the most misunderstood genres in all of music has grown a heart of flesh in place of stone. Destin Messianique embraces enigma, delves into the spiritual realm, and defines the human experience in a way that few black metal bands or artists have done before.

Destin Messianique was released September 30 via Eisenwald. You can listen below and follow Givre on Bandcamp, Facebook, and Instagram.
