Jonny Craig sure stays busy. Despite a roaring entrance with Slaves, the former Dance Gavin Dance and Emarosa member recently released The Blueprint for Going in Circles, a collaborative album with Kyle Lucas and Captain Midnite, on Jan. 27 and is currently on tour supporting it. Dates below.

Our own photographer Brooke Long caught up with the man for some portraits celebrating the release. She recounts the encounter:

I showed up early, and there was a small but excited group of people hanging out while locals performed. People were talking about Jonny Craig’s newest project, The Blueprint For Going In Circles; I could hear it as I was hanging in the back waiting for Jonny’s set time. Then I heard: “What’s up? We doing these pics or what?” It was Jonny Craig, chilling on a bar stool.

I walked up and introduced myself. He put his hand on my head and was like, “I”ll get you those pics when I’m done doing my thing on stage. Sorry if I’m all sweaty for the shots.” Super cool and down to earth dude. He got up on stage and brought an amazing show for an adoring group of fans. His new project, featuring Kyle Lucas, has brought soul and hip-hop together, and it’s an awesome mix.

After his set, Jonny made sure he made time to say hey to every fan in the club. After he signed the last autograph, he came up to me and said, “Let’s do this, girl.” There was a cool lounge area with big red couches and a graffitied bar. He sat down in the middle of the couch and gave me one of my favorite portrait shoots of my career. After the shoot was done, he gave me a hug and a high five. I loved working with Jonny, and his down-to-earth personality is as honest on the stage as it is off it.

Shot on location at The Empire in Springfield, VA.

Comrades 2020

Becoming Comrades

The trio of Comrades – husband and wife Joe and Laura McElroy alongside drummer John Gaskil – is used to living in a van and touring the country. Now, their new normal has provided them with a moment to "be adults" for once. We recently sat down with the McElroys to talk more about the spiritual reality within life, how soon they'll be able to release new music, and how koalas are their new normal.

Between the White Noise

My Epic's last full-length album came out in 2013; despite a number of EPs along the way, the band's dedication to their craft, lyrical approach, and unyielding approach to let the music come naturally has made them critical darlings. Now, they're learning to interact and feed a rabid fanbase in between albums and in a new normal.
