Memphis May Fire - 2021

Remade in Misery

Review by

Memphis May Fire knows exactly what they’re doing with their seventh full-length studio album, Remade in Misery. In their first record since 2018, the Denton, Texas natives make it clear that they have found a formula that works for their band and has executed it in a remarkable manner. With soaring choruses, heavy verses, and soul-crushing breakdowns, these tracks are concocted with all of the ingredients that come together to create a rock-solid metalcore listening experience.

Lyrically, this album is a journey that lives up to its title. Starting out in a place of despair and helplessness, frontman Matty Mullins paints a picture of anguish. In the latter parts of the record, despair turns into defiance against those who seek to bring us down. As hopeless as the lyrics may seem on the surface, tracks like “Misery and The Fight Within” offer an encouraging perspective of the growth that comes from the hardships of life. In a genre that can dwell on only the negatives of the human experience, Memphis May Fire shines the attention on the light at the end of the tunnel.

While offering a hopeful perspective on suffering, the honesty found in the lyrics is refreshing. It is possible to know that growth happens through adversity and yet still feel sorrow in the midst of it. Combine this with catchy riffs that make it impossible to not nod your head along and you have some instant crowdpleasers.

Remade in Misery did not reinvent the wheel, nor will it change your life forever, but it doesn’t have to. This record is a fun listen that strikes a remarkable balance between being accessible to the average listener and true to the band’s core DNA. It is incredibly easy to hear how well these tracks will translate live with their earworm choruses and breakdowns that will shake the walls.

Remade in Misery is set to release Friday, June 3 and is now available for pre-order on the band’s website.
