Today, HM is proud to premiere HopeFool’s latest single, “Contender.” The Austin-based quartet’s lyricism and explosive instrumentation is more evident than ever in their new release. Recorded in San Antonio with Cory Brunnemann — who also produced HopeFool’s past singles, “The New Age” and “Nocturnal” — “Contender” delivers expressive vocals, a solid rock groove, and soulful guitar leads with bravado.
When we spoke with the band about the new track, they shared more about the song’s sonic direction and roots. “‘Contender’ sits right in between that sweet spot of hard rock and metalcore, with a hint of southern twang,” said guitarist Dylan Kortz. “Being from Texas, Of course we couldn’t resist. But it’s hard to explain just exactly what ‘Contender’ is. It’s in your face, it’s punchy and riffy. You are just gonna have to hear it for yourself and be the judge.”
Vocalist Michael Boyd also weighed in on the songwriting process:
“Lyrically, I set out to write a cliche ‘be the champ’ song but the more I worked on it the more it became something else entirely and I thought to myself, ‘I want more than that.’ I think often times we find ourselves competing with our peers for remedial prizes for the benefit of someone else, so this is sort of an anthem against ‘The Man.'”
