Excitement continues to surround FLATFOOT 56 as the release of their forthcoming full-length album Black Thorn nears. Armed with a jam-packed tour schedule, the Chicago Celtic-punk outfit will bring their live spectacle to cities across the US alongside Project 86 next month before joining the Vans Warped Tour this summer. The band’s current dates also include their first-ever Canadian stops that include appearances in Toronto and Montreal. Complete upcoming dates and information follows below.
As 2010 marks the 10-year anniversary for FLATFOOT 56, the new album compacts the band’s celebrated history of eclectic and driving musical charge into thirteen tracks that highlight the pride of the working class and their Chicago roots. The collection of songs that make up Black Thorn delves into weighty thematic content while remaining fundamentally universal. “Everyone goes through hardships, but you aren’t alone,” explains Flatfoot front man Tobin Bawinkel. “Punk rock is about community and brotherhood. This record is our contribution to that.” As cathartic as it is ambitious, Black Thorn is an emphatic assault that remains vintage Flatfoot in its effortless combination of Celtic instrumentation and street corner punk rock. Bagpipes and mandolins remain just as vital as drums and guitars in defining Flatfoot’s sound.

Becoming Comrades

The trio of Comrades – husband and wife Joe and Laura McElroy alongside drummer John Gaskil – is used to living in a van and touring the country. Now, their new normal has provided them with a moment to "be adults" for once. We recently sat down with the McElroys to talk more about the spiritual reality within life, how soon they'll be able to release new music, and how koalas are their new normal.

HM Magazine Turns 35

In 1985, Doug Van Pelt photocopied a letter-sized sheets of paper, bound them together, and handed them out in person on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. It's all digital now, but, along the way, Van Pelt stirred up quite a few waves, played some seriously heavy music, and made a few friends along the way. Here: A quick look back at the magazine's 35-year history with Van Pelt and new owner, David Stagg.
