Zao promises authenticity, a sound more like ‘The Funeral of God,’ opens up about faith

In an interview with Dutch magazine Rocklife, the longest-serving guitarist in Zao Scott Mellinger opened up about the band’s current status. The summary of the translation is below, and if you’re into Dutch, you can read the article in its native tongue.

Mellinger notes a strong vibe to be authentic with their writing, as well as promising a heavier, broader sound than before, tilting closer to The Funeral of God era than the Awake?-era Zao.

He was also open about the band’s faith, admitting the band prefers no label to their music, but that half the band are still believers. To Zao, their faith is irrelevant to the music.

Since the label that put out Awake? is now defunct, they’ve had some talks with labels, but nothing’s stuck. They’re not opposed to it, but haven’t found the right fit.
