Today’s chapter shows God’s unquestioning unconditional love. Referenced is the story of the book of Hosea, where God tells His prophet Hosea to marry a prostitute – Gomer. That right there is a crazy, scandalous story, but it gets more intense as it goes on. Hosea loved this woman, they grew close, had three kids and then she returned to her faithless ways. She rejected him for the lust of strangers.
God told Hosea to go and get her back, reaffirming his love for her. Love in the face of rejection is unconditional love. It’s really a perfect analogy for God to use in His Word to exemplify the kind of faithful love He gives us – even in the face of the rejection and waywardness we present to Him.
“Jesus called us to this kind of love in the passage known as the Sermon on the Mount. He said to ‘love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.’ (Luke 6:27-28)
“‘If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.’ (Luke 6:32-33)
“‘Love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.’ ” (Luke 6:35)
Today’s Love Dare:
Love is a choice, not a feeling. It is an initiated action, not a knee-jerk reaction. Choose today to be co9mmitted to love even if your spouse has lost most of their interest in receiving it. Say to them today in words similar to these, “I love you. Period. I choose to love you even if you don’t love me in return.”
