Rogue
This is a relatively new crime tv series that was exclusive to Directv. I like the way they set the series up – juxtaposing a streetsmart undercover policewoman that’s not afraid to get her fingers dirty. The pilot episode shows Grace Travis (Thandie Newton) forced to prove herself by offing someone on the big bad drug crime boss’ bad side. She squirms her way out of it before Jimmy Laszlo (Marton Csokas) puts a bullet in the guy and then sends his body crunching through the big rock-busting gears to dissolve the evidence. The tension of “will she get caught,” which is equal to “will she die a swift, violent death” are coyly propped up against her efforts to be accepted into the underworld, which she willingly throws herself into out of a call for revenge over her son’s unsolved murder.
It’s a good time to swallow this “undercover out of control” dirty crime drama, because Season Two kicks off in May. I could see myself getting into this one, but it’s not an overwhelming yes. It’s good, just not better than a lot of its competition (Burn Notice, Leverage), but that’s a judgment call. It’s tough. It’s hard hitting. It’s gritty. It’s rough. Grace is easy to love and it’s easy to join Team Grace as she takes on the world (it seems). You go, girl! [eOne] Doug Van Pelt
