Imagine Star Trek with Mr. Miyagi from Karate Kid<\/em> as Captain Kirk and McCoy played by a precocious Chinese twenty-something and Spock as a long-haired black cat. And then there\u2019s the Arnold Schwarzenegger Terminator<\/em>-type footage of the warrior ready for battle with multiple guns over his should and grenades on his vest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Add lots of really bloody and funny fight scenes between a big bad ugly Rottweiler dog and the cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I rarely ever do this, but the description of the movie on the Blu-ray disc boxset does it justice when it says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“From Lam Nai-Choi, who made unhinged masterpieces The Seventh Curse<\/em> and Riki-Oh: The Story Of Ricky<\/em>, comes a film that, somehow, manages to be EVEN MADDER. An evil blob-like extraterrestrial has come to earth with nefarious intentions. Luckily some good aliens are on its trail: a man, a woman, and \u2013 of course \u2013 their fluffy black cat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With wonderful pre-CGI special effects (i.e. rubber galore) and some truly bonkers action (watch out for that cat!), The Cat<\/em> is part horror, part sci-fi and all WTF? The sane and rational folks at 88 Films are proud to present your new favourite crazy movie.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s an iconic piece from the Hong Kong cinema library and the adventurous fun is worth a watch. The best part about all the action and bizarro situations is that none of the actors let on. It\u2019s played as the most serious thriller ever. Set in various warehouses, a garage full of gangsters, and city alleyways, the adventure is compelling enough to get you cheering for the good aliens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bonus footage is entertaining as well. The audio commentary is kind of dry, but informative and shows insight into the moviemaking process. An interview with writer Gordon Chan is in Cantonese with English subtitles (as is the movie). The Japanese cut, however, is a completely new film, cut with Japanese actors. Including that here is an interesting second watch, albeit at a slightly less quality resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
