When I was given this album to review, the &#8220;bio&#8221; that came with it explained that it was a concept album. And it gave some explanation about a futuristic nightmare a la <em>Terminator<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;based on a loose storyline by <a title=\"Desmond Child\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Desmond_Child\">Desmond Child<\/a> and futurist Liam Carl, which predicts a world torn apart by a civil war between humans and robots. This apocalyptic nightmare serves as a warning shot to all mankind, whose only hope of survival is to reclaim our humanity&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s a crock. And I&#8217;m glad it is. I mean, who really likes to listen to concept albums? The problems with concept albums is there are always filler songs to keep the story going that are throw-aways. I can listen to Queensryhe&#8217;s <em>Operation Mindcrime<\/em> from front-to-back, but when is the last time you or somene you know listened to the &#8220;greatest concept album of all time&#8221; (note quotes), Pink Floyd&#8217;s <em>The Wall<\/em>? I mean, there are some great, great songs on there, but there&#8217;s also more than a few dismal throw-aways.<\/p>\n<p>This album can be listened to on shuffle. It&#8217;s great and amazing no matter how you slice it. But, like a concept album longs to be, listening from beginning to end is an exercise in brilliance with dynamic plays and swells of emotion that&#8217;ll kill you.<\/p>\n<p>If it was a concept album, though, it&#8217;s not about science fiction. It&#8217;s about a love relationship that soared and then crashed. This girl ripped this guy&#8217;s tender heart out and crushed it with sharp fingernails. It&#8217;s amazing how biting and venomous some of these words cut. Wow. My girlfriend likes to say, &#8220;I am SO glad these songs were not written about me!&#8221; <strong>I guess it could be the ultimate breakup album.<\/strong> There was a hint on the previous (<em>Unbreakable<\/em>) album. It&#8217;s a tear-jerker called &#8220;Through My Eyes.&#8221; It plays like the prequel to this whole album. A foreshadowing of things to come. I&#8217;ll share some of these lyrics as we go on. Now, let us begin.<\/p>\n<p>The album starts off with &#8220;<strong>Hour 1<\/strong>,&#8221; a woman&#8217;s voice says, &#8220;Welcome to humanity. This is Hour One.&#8221; Then a marching drum cadence forces your heart to start beating faster and the crunchy power chords chime in with vocalist Klaus Meine&#8217;s power metal delivery. If you miss Ronnie James Dio&#8217;s most epic moments, you&#8217;ll feel at home here. This song is one of\u00a0 the only songs on the album that seems even remotely about a &#8220;lost humanity, the world&#8217;s about to end, tilt-apocalypse&#8221; kind of vibe. The repeating chorus is, &#8220;Stay down!&#8221; It&#8217;s a warning to keep your head low. It&#8217;s a perfect song, energy-wise to start the album, because it&#8217;s fast, pumping and powerful. When the song builds up for the ending and then swells back with tweaking guitar knobs and scratched strings, you almost want to pause for a rest.<\/p>\n<p>Then a power rocker with plenty (in my opinion too much) predictable riffing picks up without that rest your brain, body and ears need. &#8220;<strong>The Game of Life<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The time has come for me to talk to you<br \/>\nand I don&#8217;t mean to hurt your pride<br \/>\nbut everybody needs a friend<br \/>\nsometimes to make you see \u2014 the light<br \/>\nin the game of life<br \/>\nthe strong survive<br \/>\nwe&#8217;re on a one-way street<br \/>\nwe&#8217;ve got to make it out alive&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Meine&#8217;s pouting vocals in the verses pull you in seductively and the chorus is an anthem. It&#8217;s good, but there is so much better yet to come. It&#8217;s formulaic, but they do it so well. In fact, they kill it. But it gets better.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The game of life<br \/>\nthe game of l-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-i-fe!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The next song starts off with a singing guitar lead that&#8217;s as melodic and seductive as Meine&#8217;s voice, which comes in shortly after eight measures with a whisper:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Hello again<br \/>\nyou&#8217;ve been alone awhile and I can use a friend<br \/>\nyour shades are down<br \/>\nand I&#8217;ve been waiting here for you to come around.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is the whispering vocalized verses. It&#8217;s working. It&#8217;s compelling. Then Meine steps it up a bit for the pre-chorus:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;and it&#8217;s not about forgiveness<br \/>\nbecause it&#8217;s all about the love<br \/>\nanyhow&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and then the drums kick in to take us to the chorus, which climbs in energy and seeming desperation:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We were born to fly<br \/>\nto reach beyond the sky<br \/>\nto carry on forever after<br \/>\nyou and I keep our faith alive<br \/>\nwith you I&#8217;m not afraid<br \/>\nto rise and fall and face disaster<br \/>\nYou and I, we were born to fly!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This love relationship is soaring at the moment. These are high words to praise a relationship. It&#8217;s encouraging. It&#8217;s a gigantic proclamation. All seems amazingly well so far. It&#8217;s a melodic metal highlight. It&#8217;s an emotional peak. But it&#8217;s not even close to being over. &#8220;The Future Never Dies&#8221; starts off with a tickling-the-ivories piano intro that precedes Meine&#8217;s voice, where the piano turns to plodding chords that squeeze emotion with each note. It&#8217;s a power ballad moment made in heaven. It doesn&#8217;t get more gripping than this. This is greatness. Guns &#8216;N Roses&#8217; &#8220;November Rain,&#8221; UFO&#8217;s &#8220;Love to Love,&#8221; Heart&#8217;s &#8220;Alone,&#8221; Skid Row&#8217;s &#8220;I Remember You,&#8221; hits from White Lion, Whitesnake, Journey\u00a0\u2014 take &#8217;em all and line &#8217;em up and they&#8217;d only be just as good as this moment. It&#8217;ll slay you.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that Volkswagon TV ad where the driver does all the air drumming at the stoplight to Rush&#8217;s &#8220;Fly By Night?&#8221; Remember how lost this guy was in that moment? This song (and it&#8217;s not the only one on the album) has all of that mesmerizing power and more. It swells, lifts, drops and slams hard. Only you might be a puddle of tears at the end of this thing (with a beat up dashboard, too).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Play this one at full volume<\/strong> (don&#8217;t you dare listen to this album at low volume, by the way, it&#8217;d be a travesty of epic proportions).<\/p>\n<p>As the storyline moves on, Meine observes that something is happening to the relationship. Something is wrong. Follow the emotion as it plods along:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;m<br \/>\nlost in your eyes<br \/>\nreaching out to cross the great divide<br \/>\nyou<br \/>\nare drifting away<br \/>\nin mind and soul and body day by day&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Then he shifts gears and speeds up a little bit with the help of the bass, drums and guitars:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230;nothing&#8217;s stopping you and I<br \/>\nit&#8217;s do or die<br \/>\ntonight<br \/>\nso tell me why<br \/>\nI&#8217;m alone<br \/>\nwhen we&#8217;re lying here together<br \/>\non a night<br \/>\nthat&#8217;s so cold<br \/>\nand you&#8217;re just a touch a way<br \/>\nbaby, try<br \/>\nto hold on<br \/>\n&#8217;til we make it to forever<br \/>\nwe&#8217;re alive<br \/>\nand the future never dies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another verse starts.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I<br \/>\nam dying inside<br \/>\nholding back the tears I never cried<br \/>\nNow<br \/>\nI&#8217;m down on my knees<br \/>\ncuz everything you are is what I need&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tempo shift up a level as the band climbs with each word:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You&#8217;re the meaning of it all<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t let me fall<br \/>\nyou&#8217;ve gotta tell me why&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re alive<br \/>\nand the future never dies<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a pregnant pause that Meine shatters with the following line\u00a0\u2014 a passionate cry for resolution:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve got to come together<br \/>\ncuz everybody needs a heart to hold<br \/>\ncan&#8217;t you see it&#8217;s now or never<br \/>\ncuz we&#8217;ve got nowhere else to go&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And then Matthias Jabs comes screaming in with the perfect singing guitar lead, followed by Meine&#8217;s pouting questions. He&#8217;s so close, yet so far to this woman&#8217;s heart. It&#8217;s a song of hope, yet it&#8217;s so sad.<\/p>\n<p>Then bitterness comes crashing in with loud drums and more power chords. Then a pulsing beat:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s your move<br \/>\nI&#8217;m in pain<br \/>\nI&#8217;m a pawn in your game<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s your life<br \/>\nI just happen to be in it for awhile<\/p>\n<p>Oh, you&#8217;re loving me to death<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re killing me with kindness<br \/>\nwhat&#8217;s behind this<br \/>\nsudden ten &#8211; der &#8211; ness?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cue the bass on top, with drums and guitar underneath.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re loving me to death<br \/>\nand leaving me to die<br \/>\nyou make me wanna scream<br \/>\nbut my tongue is tied<br \/>\nyou play me like a toy<br \/>\nyou make my life a mess<br \/>\neverybody knows<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re loving me to death!<\/p>\n<p>When you touch<br \/>\ncan you feel?<br \/>\nis your heart<br \/>\nonly made of steel?<br \/>\nWhen you cry<br \/>\ndo you ever let emotions break your stride<br \/>\nOh, you take away my breath<br \/>\nyour unexpected hunger<br \/>\nmakes me wonder<br \/>\nwhat the hell comes next&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Like\u00a0 the other songs, the music builds up only to erupt. Another killer Jabs solo graces this one before the choruses stack up and bring the song to an end. This song is such an emotional ringer that it begs for a rest.<\/p>\n<p>It gets one, but only with a changeup of tempo. Yep, things speed up with party rock power chords. This is where it slips back into this faux sci-fi concept album.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Time<br \/>\nis a wicked master &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>close your eyes and it will crush you&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a curse born unto man<br \/>\nturns your dreams into disaster.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The chorus is huge:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Save me<br \/>\n&#8216;cuz the world&#8217;s gonna stop<br \/>\nbaby three-two-one<br \/>\nare you ready to rock?<br \/>\nCome one and brave me<br \/>\nwhen the curtain will drop<br \/>\nbaby, three-two-one<br \/>\nAre you ready to rock?<br \/>\nAre you ready to rock?<br \/>\nAre you ready to rock<br \/>\nAre you ready to rock \/ tonight?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s formula\u00a0\u2014 it could be construed as being contrived, but it&#8217;s good. It stands up alone all by itself, but it marks a perfect turning point or shift in the rolling concept album.<\/p>\n<p>The Scorpions are an amazing live band. They truly are like sonic skyscrapers that fly around, attacking with melody like a fast-hitting football team (think of a killer defense and the hard hitting that happens during the post season, where every hit means something). But what they do possibly better than anyone is that tender moment. Jabs&#8217; guitar sings with a sweetness that&#8217;s a perfect match for Meine&#8217;s golden voice. The rest of the band just happens to be a tight pocket that doesn&#8217;t let up or miss a beat.<\/p>\n<p>Cue another power ballad\u00a0\u2014 &#8220;Love Will Keep Us Alive.&#8221; The singer sounds hopeful again. Solo electric guitar dances in to start the song, handing the spotlight off to Meine&#8217;s soft and tender voice. It&#8217;s immediate sadness\u00a0\u2014 times ten. It&#8217;s easy to imagine both performers closing their eyes. It&#8217;s got soul\u00a0\u2014 melodic metal soul. Look it up in the dictionary. It&#8217;ll have a button with this intro marked &#8220;PLAY.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When I look<br \/>\nat you<br \/>\nI can see the sadne3ss in your eyes<br \/>\nin these desperate times<br \/>\nwe get pushed and shoved<br \/>\nfrom every side<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t love you<br \/>\nif you won&#8217;t let me<br \/>\ncan&#8217;t touch me<br \/>\nif you don&#8217;t try<br \/>\nI can&#8217;t feel you<br \/>\nI know that you&#8217;re ready<br \/>\nto take it to the other side<\/p>\n<p>Love will keep us alive<br \/>\nlet&#8217;s make the moment right<br \/>\nit&#8217;s now or never<br \/>\nLove will keep us alive<br \/>\neven the darkest night<br \/>\nwill shine forever<br \/>\nLove will keep us alive<br \/>\nLove will keep us alive<br \/>\nLove<br \/>\nLove will keep us alive.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The guitar leads that come after each chorus sing it one more time. The verses are like rib-crushing hugs of emotion.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When you walk away<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s an empty feeling in my mind<br \/>\nas the days go by<br \/>\nwe get caught up in our separate life<br \/>\nif you need me<br \/>\nyou know I&#8221;d come running<br \/>\nright to you<br \/>\njust give me a sign<br \/>\nI won&#8217;t leave you<br \/>\nwe&#8217;ll make it together<br \/>\nand take it through the end of time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is a sad commentary on the relationship, but it&#8217;s filled with hope. It almost has the hope of the Gospel in it with a proclamation like that. Love is powerful. What a gift God has given us. And how much pain can be wrought by it? Listen. Keep listening.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We Will Rise Again&#8221; promises more hope with its title. But the crashing intro that breaks with a pulsating heavy bass that will accompany Meine&#8217;s pouting vocals as he tells a sad story:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Holding on to you<br \/>\nlike broken glass<br \/>\nevery touch cuts deeper<br \/>\nthan the last<br \/>\nI know I should leave<br \/>\nbut it feels so good to bleed<br \/>\nA poison kiss has locked us<br \/>\nin this cage<br \/>\nour lives get twisted<br \/>\nin this masquerade<br \/>\nI can&#8217;t seem to shake this incurable need<br \/>\nthis endless addiction I feel&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cue the metal band. Crash!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Angels are crying<br \/>\nthey fall from the sky<br \/>\nheaven and hell<br \/>\nwill be burning tonight<br \/>\ncovered in ashes<br \/>\nthey cry out your name<br \/>\nand out of the pain<br \/>\nwe will rise again.<\/p>\n<p>Run in to the shadows where we hide<br \/>\nBodies tender as our worlds collide<br \/>\nNothing is sacred and everything&#8217;s wrong<br \/>\nBut you and I keep holding on<\/p>\n<p>Angels on fire<br \/>\nThey fall from the sky<br \/>\nHeaven and hell will be burning tonight<br \/>\nCovered in ashes I cry out your name<br \/>\nAnd out of the flames<br \/>\nWe will rise again<\/p>\n<p>No temptation is my sin<br \/>\nNot my darkest deepest whim&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is some torrid, dark stuff! It&#8217;s an epic song with deep and dark dynamics. It&#8217;s a setup. Crash you over the head with a sonic assault\u00a0\u2014 and then massage your ears with quiet, sweet melody. These guys are killers, I tell you!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Your Last Song&#8221; is, you guessed it, a swan song to the relationship. Jabs starts it off with a few of the the bottom six strings singing. Then Meine swoops in softly:<\/p>\n<div id=\"lyrics-body-text\" class=\"verse\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"verse\">Here I am, writing my last song for you<br \/>\nHear the words carefully<br \/>\nAnd you&#8217;ll see it&#8217;s you I&#8217;m leaving<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t want to be the one to tell you<br \/>\nThat I can&#8217;t stay another day&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"verse\">He&#8217;s facing the music, but his voice rises in desperation:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"verse\">I&#8217;ll throw the pages on the floor<br \/>\nI&#8217;m starting over like before<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll change this stupid ending<br \/>\nAnd stay with you forevermore<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">But when I&#8217;m lying next to you<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s hard to bargain with the truth<br \/>\n&#8216;Cause when you know the love is gone<br \/>\nThe time has come to write your last song&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"verse\">Then the bottom drops out and Meine sings softly again. It&#8217;s melancholy metal\u00a0\u2014 to the max!<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"verse\">There you are, smiling at me from the next room<br \/>\nBeautiful as the first day I met you and I&#8217;m so sorry<br \/>\nI couldn&#8217;t be the one to love you<br \/>\nThe way that you deserve to be<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to think of you and I as total strangers<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">I&#8217;ve lived this last goodbye a million times or more<br \/>\nIn my mind, my mind, my mind.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This repeating phrase precedes another killer, soaring guitar solo. It climbs to the sky. You can close your eyes and just feel all the right notes hit just perfectly. Instead of letting the guitar have all the attention, Meine climbs on top for the final barrage of lyrics:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"verse\">Oh and I&#8217;m gonna miss you<br \/>\nBut I can&#8217;t go back even just to kiss you<br \/>\n&#8216;Cause I can&#8217;t exist just living a lie<br \/>\nGotta lot of love to give you know before I die<br \/>\nAnd as I watch you sing along<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s killing me that it&#8217;s your last song&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Okay. Let me take a moment here and pause\u00a0\u2014 even though the album will play on and not give you this moment to rest. We&#8217;ve heard some gut-wrenchingly beautiful music thus far. You can tell, because only a weeping metalhead would ever blubber out a phrase like gut-wrenchingly. This might just be one of those bands that you&#8217;ll resist liking, because they might get you in touch with some yucky feminine side\u00a0\u2014 and that&#8217;s not manly.<\/p>\n<p>Well, the next song takes all of this epic-ness up another level. If it were possible&#8230; And it is.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Love is War&#8221; is the ultimate breakup song from the ultimate breakup album. I say ultimate, of course, because metal is the most ultimate genre known to man. It is the preeminent form of rock and roll. (Cue any of the Jack Black speeches from <em>School of Rock<\/em> here). In fact, if you are too impatient to listen to this album from track one through track 12, then just select this one and feast.<\/p>\n<p>It begins with a somber flamenco style guitar lead played on the electric. Meine comes in pouting (again), but you won&#8217;t tire of this formula. It&#8217;s too successful at completely dominating your palpable mind and music heart.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">You were once a friend to me<br \/>\nNow you are my enemy<br \/>\nPassion turns to hate and you make<br \/>\nHate worth fighting for<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden;color: #000000;background-color: #ffffff;text-align: left;text-decoration: none\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"verse\">I will rewrite history<br \/>\nAnd you will not exist to me<br \/>\nOn the day you crossed the line<br \/>\nI found out love is war&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"verse\">Wow. I turned a friend on to this album recently. I think I was preparing for my evangelistic-like fervor and efforts in this blog. I told him to listen to it 20 times. He might have actually done it before he replied. He was very appreciative for the musical favor. Of this song, he said, &#8220;Hey man, I took your advice and I listened to that Scorpions album at least 20 times &#8230; and it has grown on me&#8230; The funny thing is, the song &#8220;Love is War&#8221; I could play that 20 times\u00a0 in a row and not get tired of it, because of the obvious connection I have with it. Yeah, there&#8217;s some fantastic stuff on there, my friend. You were right about it. Thanks for the good music recommendation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not kidding. I don&#8217;t go off and rant about greatness all that too often.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden;color: #000000;background-color: #ffffff;text-align: left;text-decoration: none\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden;color: #000000;background-color: #ffffff;text-align: left;text-decoration: none\">I used to wonder about drummer James Kotak, because he wrote the lyrics to that spiritual song, &#8220;Can You Feel It&#8221; (<em>Unbreakable<\/em>). He&#8217;s the first one I thought of when I saw the title of the second-to-last track on this album\u00a0\u2014 &#8220;The Cross.&#8221; It&#8217;s a bit haunting. I think it&#8217;s about sexual abuse. It sounds like the songwriter is cleansing and venting and speaking out with power and passion:<\/div>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden;color: #000000;background-color: #ffffff;text-align: left;text-decoration: none\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"lyrics-body-text\" class=\"verse\">\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"verse\">Hey, do you remember me<br \/>\nI finally found the strength to face<br \/>\nThe pain you made me feel<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">I always held my tongue<br \/>\nAnd all the things you&#8217;ve done to me<br \/>\nAre secrets to reveal<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">I&#8217;ll never let you do this to someone else<br \/>\nNo, I could never live with myself<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">How dare you use my shame<br \/>\nTo play your wicked games<br \/>\nWith the mask you&#8217;re wearing<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">And now you gotta make amends<br \/>\nFor the demons in my head<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll nail you to the cross<br \/>\nThe cross I&#8217;m bearing<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">You, you said you&#8217;d save my soul<br \/>\nAnd sacrificed the innocence<br \/>\nThat I will never know<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">And now it&#8217;s time that you confess<br \/>\nThey say the Devil doesn&#8217;t rest<br \/>\nUntil the truth is told<\/p>\n<p>I believed in love<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">I believed in trust<br \/>\nI believed in you<br \/>\nYou became my God<\/p>\n<p>I was young and so naive<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">You were God and I believed<br \/>\nYou made me kneel, you made me feel<br \/>\nLike it was all my fault<br \/>\nBut now I know it wasn&#8217;t mine at all&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"verse\">And you thought it couldn&#8217;t get any more intense, huh? Wow. This album is just so chock full of pain. You need to hear it. Could it be one of the masterpiece albums of metal? I think so.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">The album closes with the title track, &#8220;Humanity.&#8221; It&#8217;s a great song, but one oddball thing that drove it home to me was hitting YouTube and searching some of these song titles. There&#8217;s a girl alone in a room with her guitar, performing a cover of this song. It has a completely different dynamic, of course, but the way it carries shows the strength of the hooks and the melody and the lyrics. Kudos to Scorpions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">This is one more epic song on an album full of them. This could be James Bond movie soundtrack material. It wraps up the whole sci-fi ideal, tackling the topic of humanity. It&#8217;s apocalyptic, it&#8217;s biting criticism of our behavior.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"verse\">Humanity, auf wiedersehen<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s time to say goodbye, the party&#8217;s over<br \/>\nAs the laughter dies, an angel cries<\/p>\n<p class=\"verse\">Humanity, it&#8217;s au revoir to your insanity<br \/>\nYou sold your soul to feed your vanity<br \/>\nYour fantasies and lies<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div style=\"overflow: hidden;color: #000000;background-color: #ffffff;text-align: left;text-decoration: none\">There&#8217;s a sense of dread to the song. The hope is sucked out with those words, but the way it slams down like a prophetic hammer means there is hope. Kind of a genius way to bookend the album.<\/div>\n<p class=\"verse\">It&#8217;s a crying shame that more people haven&#8217;t heard this album &#8230; yet. Perhaps the excitement I feel about this great slab of melodic metal could spread to one person at a time. And then another. If that happens, there is justice online. What&#8217;s funny is that I was so blown away by the greatness and metal assault of <em>Unbreakable<\/em> that, since this album did not deliver that kind of full-tilt ride immediately, I kind of put it aside. I knew it was good, but I dismissed it with the notion that the Scorpions calculated the creation of this album, relying upon their winning formula of anthemic rockers. Something urged me to give it another listen. I think perhaps I was outplaying <em>Unbreakable<\/em> (too much of a good thing). I knew it was the best follow-up available\u00a0\u2014 the closest thing to the greatness captured on that one. Little did I know that it&#8217;s probably consistently better.<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;m ready to hit play and do it all over again. It&#8217;s that good. And when&#8217;s the last time you had that with an album? Buy this album now. Listen to it 20 times. Email me. I anticipate your joy.
