While this issue's feature on Stryper is big -- spanning across two pages, we wanted to let ya'll read the entire one-hour interview. So, here ya go:
Tell me about the Lorca Rock Fest in Spain this past weekend…That was interesting. It was wild. Well, our journey… It took us about 3 planes to get there and we were running to our planes with about 20 minutes to spare between. We missed our third flight from Madrid to Almeria. When we got off our plane and walked into the airport, we realized and found out that all of our luggage was lost. All of our clothes, all of our gear. So, we were obviously really concerned. We waited around the airport for about an hour and we decided to go to the hotel and just … What could we do? So we went to the hotel and still no luggage. We arrived Friday and we were supposed to play Saturday. We woke up Saturday and still no luggage. We wound up getting some of our gear – a couple of our guitars and pedal boards and things like that. We were still missing drums, drum stuff, and wireless units, and a lot of our stuff. All of our clothes. We got some of it by 3 in the afternoon and we went to the venue. We still had no clothes, man. We literally had to wash undies and socks in the sink, ya know? Cuz there was nowhere to get clothes. It was brutal! It was a true test. I mean, we could have handled it in a whiney, complainy, crybaby way or we could just say, ‘Guys, hey, we’re here to do something. Let’s do it. With or without clothes, you know?’ That’s what we kept telling each other and reminding each other – that we’re here for a purpose, that it’s all a test and ‘Do we learn from it? Do we pass the test?’ So, we got through it, man.
We went on stage. We went on about 12:30. We followed Maiden. Dream Theater and Maiden. They had full production, you know. This incredible looking show. Maiden. Sounded as good as ever. They had good old Eddie up there waving the British flag, pyro. Just crazy. Great show. We go up there with our little half stacks and street clothes. We went out there and did it. The amazing thing about the show is: we were warned that probably half the crowd would leave. There were about 14,000 people there. And what actually happened was the opposite. I kid you not. You had to be there. Everyone – for Maiden and Dream Theater and all the other bands, it was kind of spread out. It was a big fairground. So everyone was kind of spread out. There was four, or five, six, seven thousand crowd up front, and then the rest of the people were way in the back and in the corners and on the sides, just kind of hanging out. But when we came on, everyone came together. And the crowd actually enlarged. It was unbelievable. The promoter was floored. He was like, ‘What? I’ve never seen this before. You’ve gotta be kidding me.’ Everyone was just going on and on about it. Like, ‘What in the world is going on here?’ The only thing we could figure is we’ve never been there before and there’s a lot of fans. A lot of people that wanted to see that band, and it was our first time there. Maiden plays there 8 to 10 times a year. So, we went on and we did it and they knew all the words. They were singing along. It was unbelievable. I ended in a prayer. I had a translater up there and everyone prayed with me. It was wild. It was a wild time. We followed Maiden, you know, and God got the last say. The last word. It was pretty amazing.
Set list:
We started with ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic,’ which by the way was packed in our luggage. We didn’t even have that as an intro, but we started asking fans and a couple fans went home and got the record we needed and delivered ‘em to us about ten minutes before showtime, so we started with ‘Battle Hymn,’ went into ‘Sing Along Song,’ cuz we had to use that as our sound check. We didn’t get a sound check or line check. So we kinda did the old ‘kunka-kunkah,’ ya know, and the keyboard going for a while. So we did ‘Sing Along,’ and then we went into ‘Makes Me Wanna Sing,’ break. Went into ‘Free.’ Into ‘More Than A Man.’ Break. Went into ‘Loud ‘N’ Clear,’ into ‘Calling On You.’ Break. Change guitars. We did ‘In God We Trust,’ new version. Into ‘Live Again’ off the new record. Break. Then we did ‘Open Your Eyes,’ which is off the new record. And then we did ‘Honestly.’ We asked the crowd if they wanted a ballad and they all started shouting ‘Honestly.’ We were gonna kinda take a chance with that and we wound up doing it. Did ‘Honestly.’ They loved it. They sang along. It was really cool. After ‘Honestly’ we did ‘The Way’ and ‘Soldiers Under Command,’ and then we left the stage. And then ‘Abyss’ and ‘To Hell With The Devil.’ But I think I’m leaving out a couple songs. If I am, I apologize. You should have about 13 or 14 songs.
It was amazing, man.
So, how intimidating was it to follow Dream Theater and Iron Maiden?
Not a bit. And I don’t say that in a way (changes voice), ‘Oh, hey! We’re as good as them.’ We don’t think that at all. I mean, they’re amazing bands. But it wasn’t intimidating at all. We just didn’t even really think about it. We just. We went out there and did what we were there to do. It’s a whole different thing. I mean, apples and oranges. You can’t compare us to Dream Theater. If we were that type of music and trying to do the progressive metal thing, then maybe it would be a lot more intimidating. But we’re more of a freestyle, just go out and have fun kind of band. A little more a la Van Halen, Van Halen-ish verses the real progressive thing. So, we’re just a totally different thing, so we kept telling ourselves that and it really wasn’t intimidating at all.

Yes. Stryper is Reborn !! Great Interview Doug. No hard feelings on the other interview.
It bothers me that Doug based his review like so many others critics in general on personal opinion. "it sounded like another Michael Sweet solo album!" I know and every Stryper fan knows Mike wrote and produced all of Strypers stuff. Great interview though and I am glad Doug was man enough to tell Mike face to face that he dissed the new record because it sounded like but was not... I see a giant CROW flying Dougs way!!! hahaha
Yeah. I agree. All this 'it's a Michael Sweet' record stuff. I think it's an excellent record - full of beautiful Stryper harmonies and great guitar work. Overall I think the new record reeks of excellence...and it's so nice to not be in any doubt over the message. Stryper are as always bold about their faith - glad they're back
I have to say that this record does embrace many of the sounds from Michael's solo project "Truth" like "I Am Adam" and "Achilles Heel", the remenants of that album and the song "Save Me" powers that record into this new era not to forget "Truth." It's obvious that Michael writes most of the songs and that reflection comes through in any of his projects whether they are solo albums, Stryper albums or directed albums. I personally think they rallied from their last studio album "Against The Law", which in my case, musically, was just plain brilliant, and took root from that album for the more darker sound.
In addition, because of I got on a soap box, this album is truly a new direction for Stryper and their fans. Michael did a great job on keeping some traditional Stryper sound and blending it into the future. Maybe a littler darker edge on the sound could be implemented in the future but too drastic of a change might have turned heads too soon so the blend of past/future was introduced delicately "Sweet".
I just love the new cd.I do miss Tim but i wish him well.
I also think Reborn is an awesome new release that does not sound dated. Maybe Dougs been hangin out with the modern bands too much the past 10 years, which by the way is about the time I quit purchasing Heavens Metal. This issue I will purchase! Keep Rockin Stryper!!
The new album is great! I admit it wasn't what I expected at first, but after listening through it a few times it really grew on me. Doug, buddy, I think you really hurt Michael's feelings, man. Shame Shame Shame on you. Let's let Stryper music enter into the 21 century instead of expecting them to just repeat what they did in the 80's.
you guys are kidding? the new Stryper record "Reborn" is one of their best... i mean, it just sound Fresh, mature and still it rocks... is the same Stryper's Essence but the sound is updated... we are 2005!!! probably i'd been dissapointed if they had recycled and cloned THWTD or Against the Law album, those albums are excellent but part of history, they rocked the world back in the 80s or 90s, but its 2005, for a band to stay without re-defining their sound or style its kinda monotone, its like going on mediocrity, thats the point were a lot of bands like to stay safe trying to resurrect past glories o sucess... a band must grow, musically, must translate their sound to new music tendences, new times, new generations... see u2.. see aerosmith they still rock in a fresh new sound without losing their essence... thats what being creative its all about... Im glad with Stryper new record, makes me happy to know that they are still creating great music in 2005 musical language without losing their essence, they rocked me back in the day, they still rock this generation... they didnt dissapoint me with the new album, they just dare to re-structure their music to the new sound... they are still creative great musicians and i think the are improving... thats why they KEEP THE FIRE BURNING!
A lot of people are stating that the new Stryper album sound just like a new Michael Sweet album and that its because Michael wrote most of Stryper's music, and they're right. Most of the songs from Stryper have Michael's name and some were Michael and Oz. What some may not realize is the reason why this album sounds more like a new Michael Sweet album is because it basically is. I don't know ALL of the facts on this one but the songs were written originally for his new solo album... just ended up being Stryper's reunion instead. I think it sounds great and it just sounds more like a mordern continuation of Stryper's excellent work to me
Am I the only one or...? I am not to crazy about 'Reborn'. Actually I am very dissapointed by it. All the guitar-licks are just chords, no riffs anymore. And I've heard so many bits and parts before on Mikes solo albums. I love Stryper. Really I do, but that is probably why I am not excited about Reborn. I think I will take my changes with the upcoming DVD. That sounds exciting to me! Please, no offence, just giving my opinion.

i have been a stryper fan since the biginning and love their music. it is wonderful thst Stryper have regrouped and are touring. I agrree, the album is different but we have to allow Mike and the team to create their new fresh sound. I would like to hear stryper release some songs that are a little heavier, maybe even do something together with POD. Vocally, Michael you rock!!!No one in the world has the range and clarity you have. You guys have been an inspiration to me and I love you guys for just playing good rock and roll. What would it take to get you to South africa...Talk to me!!

I have been a HUGE Stryper fan since Yellow&Black came out, and I LOVE the new cd. I see what some people might say about parts of it sounding somewhat like Mike's solo stuff... so what? It's a hard rockin cd, alot of good songs that jump out at you right away. Reborn is a hot track- I love Live Again and Passion... and the remake of In God We Trust! wow! My big problem (and from the interview- Mike felt the same) was that IGWT was a bit too produced. The new version kicks that in the butt and gives you more of that live Stryper flavor. I can't wait to see them live!
I think spliting hairs is a waste of time. The new album 'reborn' rocks. Let it. Music is an art. Let it speak for itself! Stryper rocks eternally!
I like it all...my favs are Live Again and If I Die but I think If I Die isn't too popular for some reason although it is probably the closest to being the "80's" and still remain in 2005.
i like the product from reborn. I'm an old fan. But in this new cd's, we found not a "stryper's ID".
It not totally good. Il manque quelque chose. Many songs are very good, but that is not "stryper".

i don't like the drum sound on this album, it sounds to blah.. robert, i know your better than this. the album is good though. it took a few listens to start liking it. i honestly wish they had more of the old sound incorperated in the new stuff, because that's what made me like them.
Yes, REBORN is a Michael Sweet solo project, but how can you mistake that annoying snare drum of Robert's? It's the same one we heard on the reunion tour, C'mon, Bob, a little brighter and less rubbermaid sounding!!! I do enjoy the CD, and since I've been a fan since 1985, I guess if STRYPER released a polka album I'd buy it. Looking forward to the 10/9 show in Chicago. Overall, great record, I love "If I Die" - what a message!
I have one word to say about "Reborn", that word is "Awesome". I wish that Stryper's fans with the negative comments would give them a break, if someone in your family does something that you don't totally support, 99% of the time you'd still back 'em up, do the same for "STRYPER"! I think for the amount of time that they've been apart, they did an awesome job! To me, "Stryper" is family--So, don't insult my family!!
Good interview. Got Reborn at Wal-Mart in Moulton, Alabama. The weekend after its release, the store had 2 copies in inventory according to their computer terminal in the music dept. A nice older lady and myself scoured the CD's for 15-20 minutes and couldn't find 'em. A week later, I walked by and the entire inventory of Reborn (both copies!) were at eye level on one of the new release little shelf thingies. I bought it (WITH the label goofs). I've enjoyed it. Guitar riffs ARE lacking, except the new IGWT, which has some cool solo licks. The drums sound a little canned at times. Thumbs up, though!
I have followed Stryper since 1983, when they first broke out. I am so happy to have a new Stryper cd in my hands in 2005. I will always support them, no matter what. For the record, I love the new cd!!! I love the darker sound and I love that they have returned to their spiritual roots. S.T.R.Y.P.E.R. 4/LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!
i've been a fan since "soldiers" and nothing would please me more than "thwtd II" but let's face it it ain't in the cards so get over it. as a musician/producer myself the musicianship on this album isn't what it used to be but then again the production isn't either. but if it sounded like the old stuff how successful do you think it would really be.not very i'm afraid.
when i write songs for my band U-TURN i have to understand that while i would love to write riffs like whitecross,impelliteri,etc.. what i want is irrelevant fans want a certain MODERN-type sound or they won't listen.

Reborn is a great ""Stryper"" record, and any one that says otherwise is a nit-wit. I don't see how any one at all can have a bad thing to say about Reborn. I can't stop playing it. Everyone sounds awesome on it. As I write this it is Tues 10-4-5, I just saw Stryper this past Saturday night at the Hayloft in Mt Clemens, MI. My ears are still ringing. I have seen Van Halen, Dream Theater, Aerosmith, Guardian, Page and Plant, Queensryche, and others many times in concert, this past Saturday nights show was the best concert that I have ever been to. I can't wait to see the DVD that they are making with Tracie, I mean the one with Pete Bess, whoops I mean Tim Gaines will be awesome as well, but this set list that they were playing was awesome. The remake of Honestly was sweet (no pun intended).Finally, wake up Doug, how can you be pro-Scorpions and then slam Stryper(Stryper blows the Scorps away!!), do you hate Christmas to? I have seen Stryper three times in concert. I first saw Stryper back in late 1988 while they were touring for the In God We Trust album. It was, in fact, the first concert I had ever been to. And, it ROCKED!!! They played plenty of songs from their new album (at the time), and I enjoyed that music very much, along with the rest of their stuff. I next saw Stryper in July of 2001 at Cornerstone in Bushnell, Illinois. It was great to see them playing music together again, but I noticed that they did not play one song from In God We Trust. I was kind of disappointed in that fact. Then, I saw them just three days ago at the House of Blues in Chicago, Illinois. I was blown away by the show. It was AWESOME!!! Michael Sweet still has the phenomenal vocal chords working. And, he can still hit those high notes, much to the pleasure of the crowd, myself included!! Oz still knows how to rip those chords!! And, Robert just JAMS on the drums!!! Nice hats, buddy!!
;-) The new album is AWESOME, and I enjoyed hearing those songs in concert... especially the faster spin they put on the chorus of Reborn. Reborn, Open Your Eyes, and When Did I See You Cry have to be my favorites from the new album. I also enjoyed the chronological journey back in time, but I noticed that, once again, 1988's In God We Trust album was completely overlooked. Shafted!! I brought a friend with me, and In God We Trust is the only album he owns by Stryper. Michael Sweet was talking about Honestly, and Calling on You, and how those songs put them on the "MTV map". However, "Always There for You" and "I Believe in You" kept them there for a while longer. ;-) I know Michael said that the album sounds too polished and produced. (I think it's a rockin' good album, personally.) If that's the case, then "tinker" with some of the songs, but at least play one or two of them in concert, please!!! It would have been nice to at least hear the remake of I.G.W.T.!! That would have made my night. That being said, they rocked out, and praised the Lord like nobody's business on Sunday night... I can't wait to see them again.

I have not seen Stryper in concert lately but I am sure from what I have heard from Tri-Rock Radio and Reign Radio on their internet radio stations that Reborn by Stryper would be another CD that I would eventually vadd to my Stryper collection.
Stryper are an awesome bunch of guys. Hey, anybody who would wear my 777 necklaces on stage just to give a guy a lift are OK by me!
Man you guys rock, yall got to show me how to play that awsome guitar in the song(IN GOD WE TRUST). Alsays keep god with you at all times, and everything will go smooth.
