How are things going? How is P.O.D. doing in late 2005? What’s new?
(laughs) Late 2005? Just, um… Actually, man, we’re just anxious to get back on the road. It’s been a minute. It’s the longest time we’ve ever taken to record a record. Now that the label finally has a release date and we’re going over treatments right now for videos, you know, start rehearsals for the Staind tour. So, we’re good, man. I think we’re just excited. We’ve got two friends of ours from the neighborhood who are gonna jam with us on stage and kinda fill out the sound a little bit, so we’re looking forward to hitting the road with them. All in all, man, I think we’re just ready.

Cool. The friends from the neighborhood – what instruments are they playing?
Um, well my buddy, he’s got an extra guitar and then another one of my bro’s, is on percussion, keyboards, and backup vocals.

Wow.
Yeah.

Your new album, Testify. I’ve heard an advance release and one of my observations or questions that is begging to be asked is this: With Satellite, your band seemed to really elevate itself above and beyond the trend at the time of raprock, opting for rock and roll exploration. Many of the songs I hear here seem to be fully embracing those earlier influences, where reggae and hip-hop take a prominent role. What made the band go after this direction?
Um, man, I think it just came down to doing, again, doing the things that we like. I know a lot of the talk when we did Payable On Death was, you know, everybody had their opinions and they’re saying, ‘Oh, raprock is gone and it’s dead,’ and we’re like, ‘Well, that’s kind of what we love to do.’ But I think it kind of sunk in a little bit, you know? With having Jason, it was kind of like, ‘You know what? This is our opportunity to kind of, just, you know, shoot from hip with Jason and whatever comes out, comes out.’ I think, with this record, it was like, ‘Man, that’s just one thing we love to do. We don’t really care whether it’s in or not.’ You know what I mean?

Uh-huh.
We have about 20 songs right now and we’re still deciding which ones are going to make the record. The more I go through the record, there is… I’m proud that we have a lot of that rap influence back. Everyone asks me, ‘What’s this record sound like?’ I’m like, ‘Well, depending on what songs make the record, it’s kind of collaboration of all the past records, you know, since Fundamental. Even on one of the songs on the new EP (Warrior) reminds me of some old Brown stuff. I think, man, we had taken so much time… It was like, we just started writing songs and however it came out, it came out. Some things we tried that we ended up throwing away and some things we ended up keeping, that we just realized, ‘You know what? These songs are going to be fun to play once we start jamming and once people know it. These songs are going to be fun to play.’

great article Doug, a little concerned that Greg Feldman and Glen Ballard get their names totally butchered. Typo? Did someone else type this up for you? I was a little surprised to to see that. Nevertheless thanks for the great article.

Enjoyed it! Very personal interview. It's good to see a band staying real after all these years. They've grown up quite a bit (though they're on average about 8 years older than me) since the old days. They seem humble, and I guess you'd probably know better than us.

Thanks. Yeah, a good friend transcribed this for me, and he didn't know who they were. I am still in deadline and wanted to get this article up on Jan 24, so I took a chance and threw it up there, knowing there might be some inaccuracies like that.

I hope I spelled this guy, Paul Fidor's name right!
