If you saw this band opening for Chevelle last Spring, you might've wondered about that frontman, who sported a "Jesus Loves My Tattoos" t-shirt before discarding it to reveal lots of interesting ink on his back and head. Read on and satisfy our mutual curiosity.

So how’s road life treating you?
Oh, it’s going well, man. It’s going pretty good. We’re making it work.

Great.
Now you’re from Austin, right?

Yeah.
Alright, cool, cool.

I went to see you guys opening for Chevelle about a month or two ago.
Oh, cool man. Yeah. How’s it been going since then?

Uh, real good. Just put to press our 20th anniversary issue so that was a lot of fun. A lot of work too.
I’m sure.

So, yeah. Well, tell me about your album. It’s a debut album, is that right?
Yeah, it’s our first record. It’s nobody’s really first record, but this is this band’s first record.

Right. What songs stand out to you and why?
Uh, what songs and why? You know what? They all really have a special place, you know? Um, we got together and recorded like 18 songs, so these, the 11 that are on the record, are the best of the ones that we just couldn’t could not have on the record and we were seriously contemplating having more songs on the record but, you know, the label and management decided that it would be a good idea to save some of those songs for soundtracks and stuff like that so, I mean, really all the songs are keepers, you know? I guess the special ones for different reasons are “Bare bones,” is the first song that we wrote together as a group, it’s the first song we actually sat and you know, drums, guitars, and basses and [?865?] and played together so that one stands out as kind of the defining moment of what we were gonna sound like.

Cool.
And “Brother” is the first single, so that always kind of holds a special place in your heart and it’s kind of how we’re being introduced to the world so that one stands out as well and, you know, there’s a bunch of songs on there man, that I just can’t wait for people to hear.

Right on. Well, what are some of the most goofball and craziest things you’ve seen on the road?
The craziest things I’ve seen on the road? Oh, man. What can I mention and not get in trouble for, I guess that’d be a better question. Um…uh…Will and I’s water and beer fight with the Chevelle guys on the last day of the tour, that was a good time. We all got soaked and ended up soaking wet, smelling like beer afterwards.

Mmm hmm.
Um, what else, man? There’s a bunch of good stuff I could tell you about. Um…well, our first day of the tour was probably the most remarkable where we started out and Troy comes in from the back of the bus with his video camera in pieces. It had been completely destroyed and nobody could figure out how it had happened. And then as we were kind of surveying the damage, the water started pouring out down the hall and soaking the carpet and we turned around to find that the toilet was overflowing and uh…and as we were cleaning up the mess from that, we hear some guy in a Harley pulls up beside us and starts waving his arms and trying to, waving an arm, and yelling at us trying to get our attention. So, we open the window, he’s like, “Yeah, you’ve got a flat tire on your trailer.” So, all that within like 5 minutes was a pretty remarkable event, but I don’t know man, there’s a lot of stuff but that’s the crazier moments.

How was it touring with Chevelle?
Chevelle, man? They’re really really nice guys, man and they treated us better than they probably should have, but you know, I mean, they made sure we were well taken care of on the tour. The Chevelle guys had toured with a couple of the members of this band as an opening band for Sevendust and an opening band for a couple of the other bands so it was cool. It was kinda like a return of a favor and uh…kind of a family getting back together kind of atmosphere. It was really cool thing, being out with those guys.

Awesome. I’ve got a question about your tattoos but I wanted to ask first if there’s any publicity shots that show any of the ink.
Well, my head tattoo is in the video, which is on MTV2 and FUSE and a couple of other stations right now. As far as a publicity shot of the tattoo, I would have to contact Warner Bros. and see if they have any. I know some have been taken, but I don’t know which ones they have on hand to use.

Yeah, it’s always nice to have something visual if you’re going to talk about something.
Right.

But, what are some of your…
You know what, if they don’t, we’ll email you, we’ll email you a picture of it.

OK.
We’ll get you a picture of it somehow, just remind Penny.

Awesome. Cool. I’ll follow up with her on that. So, what do some of your tattoos represent to you?
Um, I’m kind of a…I like tattoos that kind of represent good versus evil.

Mmm hmm.
You know, the, you know, the epic battle kind of things, but, I have the archangel Michael casting Satan into hell, it’s on the back of my head and kind of around the sides of my head and goes down my back and then I have a big, a shoulder and arm piece of St. Christopher carrying the Christ over the river Jordan. And they’re both old religious paintings so that’s kind of the style of art that I like, you know?

Mmm hmm.
And then, my other arm is something I drew myself, you know. My first tattoo, kind of representing the first tour so…that’s about it, that’s all the ink I have at this point.

Cool. What’s your opinion on Jesus Christ?
What’s my opinion on Jesus Christ?

Yeah.
Uh…that’s a strange way to word it. Um…

Penny: Hey guys, it’s Penny, just checking in on the time.
Ok, we got a little bit then…?

Penny: How many more questions do you have, Doug?
Oh, about two or three...

Penny: OK.
...Hundred, no, I’m just kidding.

Penny: (laughs) Alright, well, do you mind just cutting it down to one because I have to move on to the next, if that’s alright.
OK.
