Cold Interview

Email from Lava Records publicist:
hey Doug - hope you’re doing swell. Wanted to pitch you on our Gold-selling band Cold as I think you might definitely now have a reason to feature the guys. I’ve been having discussion with Scooter Ward (singer) and he’s really embracing spirituality and God and wants to talk about it. He was raised Baptist, but then got caught up in the whole rock n’ roll lifestyle (drugs, alcohol, etc) and fell away from religion until he was faced with immortality and hardships. Bascially his fiancee broke up with him, he went into rehab and was dropped by his record label - all while his sister was battling cancer. It was a terrible time and Scooter found that God was a huge source of him coming out of such a black period. The album has so many eye-opening, poignant songs, and with titles like, “God’s Song,” “When Heaven’s Not Far Away” and “When Angels Fly Away,” you can certainly see he’s HM’s cuppa tea no? Can we discuss? He’s ready to talk --!

Let’s rock this!
Florida-based hard rockers Cold returned with their fourth studio record, A Different Kind of Pain, on August 30 (Lava Records). After a two year hiatus since their Gold-selling previous album, Year of the Spider, this album demonstrates the band’s tremendous growth as songwriters. “Making this record wasn’t just about dealing with the darkness, it was a healing process,” remarked singer Scooter Ward. “Everyone who was involved and everybody who was around us at the time was changed by this album.”
Let’s talk about God. Specifically, what do you think about Jesus Christ?
Well I really don’t know what to think. What happened to me on this record is something that never happened to me before and during the time of this record we started out, I don’t know if you’ve done any research on our band….
Yeah…Yeah
A lot of the surroundings were really dark and there was a lot of things happening in our band. We always had faith in God, but we would always question things before; and recently, during the process of this record a lot of things happened to us. I was a bad alcoholic and drug addict. A few years ago, my sister had been diagnosed with cancer, and was terminally ill to where they were giving her two months to live and all kinds of stuff was going on with that. I went to rehab and changed my life and in that moment I think I started finding more faith in God and I just needed something to grab on to, because I had nothing in my life at that point. And the thing that really turned it around was one day my mom was in Florida and she was in a grocery store and she keeps walking down this isle and this little old man kept following her around throughout every aisle and me and my sister were sitting back at the house, waiting for her to come home and she walks home and she told us the story with the old guy and she said that this little old man kept following her around through each aisle and she turned down one aisle and he put his hand on her shoulder and he said, ‘Soon everyone in your family will be okay,’ and he said, ‘Everything is going to be better.’
Wow
And this was a week after the doctors told us that my sister was going to die in two months and, for some reason, when she walked in she was practically radiating, and when she told me and Jennifer that story, it just, like, gave us hope; and we just go, ‘That was an angel,’ you know? I didn’t know how to react to that and I just go, ‘Oh my god,’ and so, from that moment on, and it’s two weeks later the new pills that Jenn was taking had counteracted the cancer and now she is in remission and she is better. Along with that, my life had turned around throughout the process of making the record and I sat down at the piano and every song I wrote, I said, ‘All right. I’m going to write it with hope in it and faith in it and with … no matter how dark my life is right now when I am done with this song, I am going to feel better about myself and make myself a better person, and I said, ‘When I am done with this record my faith is going to be stronger than it ever has been before and, you know, I am going to be better than I ever have been before. And, during the time of writing, that record me and Sam felt… We did it in my sister’s room. We bought my parent’s old house and we recorded the record in her room just for poetic reasons, but at the same time when we got in the room we started writing the music, we thought there were angels or ghosts with us the whole time. We were just, like… We felt the vibe when we walked in the room. We felt like wherever we went, I would have little things happen to (me), where I was, ‘Oh, and there is the angel again; and I thought I was just surrounded by them the whole time during the record, and it felt so good and so great. You know, I woke up and I was happy. I thought I was, you know, guarded by everything – that nothing could happen as long as my faith was strong. It just really changed my life; and when I looked at everything like that, I don’t know… I think it helped my music. It helped my life. It helped everyone get better. It was a miracle to me to wake up one morning and have nothing… and everything taken away from you. What do you do? You just sit there and wallow in it, or do you want to find faith in something and help it pull you through? And I chose to find faith in God and I think He pulled me through. I know he pulled me through.

Hey,
Interesting article with Cold. Seems like they whole purpose behind the lead singer doing the interview was to simply promote hold Cold will make you life better. The Dud never answer your question about Jesus!?! Seems to be more New Age spiritual that Christian spiritual. is this just a publicity move for them?
I agree, It doesn't seem like he really understands what faith is about. It's not just to feel good. Not even close. It's about God's grace and our accepting his gift. Sacrificing ourselves for Him, following His will and trusting Him.
"If people are having doubts or problems or stuff like that maybe they should listen to Cold because it helps a lot."
Ha!
I appreciated the article... though the guy needs to be challenged and lay down a foundation that combines "truth" with his "spirit." May it be!
It's a really interesting interview. Before i was a Christian, Cold was one of my favorite bands and even as a baby Christian i still listned to them but a while back i gave up on most secular music. I've always prayed for the guys in Cold, there was something in their music, despite of its darkness, that gave me hope and helped me through. I also knew that Scooter was somewhat spiritual but didnt know exactly how he felt about God. I know that all of the guys (with the 2 ex guitarist, kelly and terry) had a belief in God but i dont think anyone of them is truly saved. I've read and heard a few songs from the new cold album and i saw that it was more positive and spiritual than other albums. Please pray for the guys in Cold, specially for Scooter the lead singer...i believe with all my heart that God can use them if they surrender their lives to Him and God will be truly glorified. It does seem like Scooter knows about God but doesn't KNOW HIM as Savior. God bless ya'll
Scooter...is a religous person i think just like he said dosent want to be labled as a christian band. Cold does save lives...they saved mine. Its not a publicity stunt. They mean what they say. There Songs have real impact. real meaning behind them.
I kind of like the music of Cold. They have some good art as you put it; however, still unsure of the details of their faith. Only God knows with certainty and I do not need to know that to enjoy their music personally. Does not mean we will be taking communion together at present. Wish all the best for Cold as they are a whale better than a lot of "spiritual" people who are just not good artists. Please, Father commune with Scooter and the guys in Cold and breathe life into them and into all of us each and every day. By the authority of Jesus we ask. Amen.
i don't really understand their "official" stand about Jesus, and christianity, we ALL know about the new christian labels... "christians in a rock band" and "not a christian band but... i'm a believer, etc." and all that stuff... but in this case... it doesn't seem to be clear...
i'd like doug to ask him that important question: "What do you think about... i'm the way, the truth and the life, no one come to the father.... etc." probably it will clarify everything...
I think many of these post have valid points. It is always good to see or hear about a quality musician or band that has turned over a new leaf ie found GOD! Like with many of these people ( Scott Stapp, Brian "Head or Heady" Welch ) and may be more so with this guy that some sort of Discipleship program or mentor is needed to further develope this new feeling and on fireness. Examples like this reminds me of when I was younger and kids would go to church camp many were quote saved but within a fews weeks the world beaten them down again. I always questioned were they really saved or was it just a show. Only God truly knows. One thing I do know is that the area church should have Discipled these new believers better. One thing as a Counselor I always tell people is GO DEEPER it seems that the world around as is so shallow and only interested in the surface. GOD IE Christ wants one Heart which buried deep with the Human body but within a renewed or restored heart comes the Transforming of one mind
which the Holy Scriptures talk about.
This can not be achieved by only scratching the surface. Go Deeper. Figure out what you believe and why?
Understand what is meant by Prophetcy,
Justification, Redemption, Salvation.
Understand why you are Protestant, Catholic, Study Church History be able to defend your faith! Not only will be make you stronger in your beliefs but it will allow you to share your faith more effectively in leading others to Christ. I to will be praying for this guy but I pray that he and his fellow band mates find a place - ( Church Home or at least good Christian Fellowship )where they can get the meat and potatoes of God Word to allow them to grow and get stronger. Only then will some Christians be satisfied with the
answers a newbe or wantbe gives. Inclosing The Christian Band ANTESTOR has a quote: WITHOUT LOVE ONLY THE HATE REMAINS! Love this guy Love is what will change the world. I recently went to see U2 in concert and BONO said we all need to COEXIST after all we all are the sons of Abraham Christians, Jews and Arabs, that is something Deep to think upon and if that doest not get you get you. Try then to find the Spirituality in C.S. Lewis new movie from The Chronicles of Naria in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
seems a lot like a publicity stunt to me... "buy our album it will help you" umm what about the God you were just telling everyone about?
I get the impression that Scooter is trying to work out his faith. A lot of this stuff is still new to him. Remember that salvation is a process, one that needs to be worked out with 'fear and trembling'. Let's not badger a guy for not having all the details. Lets instead pray that God will put someone in Scooter's path who will be able to disciple him.
I have listened to Cold for a few years now, and they helped me through the really tough times. Since being saved, I have God as my strength, but I can still appreciate Cold's music, regardless of their own religious opinions. I have always been confused as to where Scooter stands with regards to his faith, and it seemed that he was as confused himself! I am overjoyed to hear that he is beginning to discover God. Don't forget that we were all once confused or uncertain about our faith. Scooter needs support and prayer, and I am positive that God will Save him by His grace.
hey guys well i love cold and scooter is mighty sexy!!! they are the best band in the world!! i love them sooo much!!!
love always!!

I've been a COLD fan for years and they have helped me thru some hard times in my life. I always felt there was some faith and hope mixed with the darkness and I could relate to it. I am excited that Scooter and the guys are turning towards GOd now and trying to better themselves along with their fans. We just need to remember that you need to take small steps before you can take large leaps. COLD will get there, they just need patience and prayer.
How dare you judge him with where he is at in life!!! IS IT SO LONG ago that you were in spirituality for feeling good? The man said that he is TRYING... I wish for once there might be a Christian who would jump to help instead of jump to condemnation... Some one once told me that "if Christians REALLY believed what they were saying they would crawl over glass just to tell people about Jesus." Maybe no one ever took the time to really explain what Christianity is about." Shame on you for thinking you are better than him because you are not "in it to feel good." Just try and remember we are all sinners saved by grace. Don't forget where you came from!
WELL SAID JORDAN! And to the people condemning him right out of the gate...what gives you the right to judge? Stop wasting your time making useless comments. For one thing, the interviewer wasn't very good. The questions weren't laid out in a logical manner, and from that alone, it leads me to believe there was more to this "conversation".
And if it was a publicity stunt, don't you think COLD as a band would seek out people to say "hey we're a christian band"? Remember who asked who to do the interview people.
whatever i said i didnt want to sound like i was judging him...but what i got from the interview is that he's searching for truth and there's nothing wrong with that...i been praying for him as well as the rest of the guys...a mistake we often do as Christians is talk about those who don't know the Lord instead of praying for them...remember that God hears our prayers.....i have tried to write to scooter about 3 times on their message board and on their myspace to talk to him about God...i dont know if he ever read any of the messages or whatever but i hope he did...i was even willing to go to one of their concerts to talk to him and the rest of the guys after the show but stuff came up and i didnt go....and i do agree with some of you that said that it's a process....we cant just change from one day to another...i been a Christian for almost 3 years and God's still changing me...pray that scooter and the rest of the guys put their faith completely in Christ...and that someone may be there to help them grow...it'll be awesome to see them on fire for God like Brian Welch...well....God bless ya'll
I hope that all of you can find the time to pray for every member of COLD so that they can find peace in Jesus.
This sin't a publicity stunt, they saved me from committing suicide, they made me feel like someone shared the pain and they will always hold a place in my heart.
a publicity stunt?ha!thats a good one.i know this !i know jesus didnt condemn people for trying to express how they feel.Thats all i was doing.Telling a story of my life and my experience on writing this record.I thought christians were to be christlike and not condemn people.but to me some of your comments seem to come from some place evil.and i would rather not be a part of your misconceptions and verbal attacks.I bet this why alot of kids and people searching for something shy away from christianity because of the constant judging.Dont judge people.just love and have faith in them.Jesus was judged when he shouldve been loved.some of you are acting like the ones that made the cross!
and our music does help people and enlighten people.Do some research on my band and fans before you comment.God bless.
Jesus died for all of us. Scooter Ward is quite possibly the most Christlike person I have ever talked to. Did Christ condemn the Pharisee's for their judgmental behaviors... No he saved that for His father and why is it that Christians (which means little Christs) seem to think it is there opinion that matters when really God's opinion is the only one that matters. How about we for once leave the judging to God.
i hurd a some of you saying that Scoot doesnt know what being a christian is about. its true that finding cold and God was awsome for me and even saved my life. through that suiside time i had. but dont point fingers. come on God doesnt want that. Just pray for Scooter. hes an awsome artist and beleaves in God. hey maybe he doesnt know all the answers but thats when we come in and lay hands on him and pray. sry that kinda pissed me off. my bad.
